Description

What It Is & What It’s Used For

  • Generic Name: Atenolol 100 mg, a cardioselective β‑1 blocker

  • Indications:

    • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

    • Angina pectoris (chest pain)

    • Heart rhythm control such as arrhythmias

    • Secondary prevention post‑myocardial infarction

    • Off‑label uses include thyrotoxicosis, migraine prophylaxis, and alcohol withdrawal syndrome, depending on clinician oversight. 


⚠️ Dosage & Mechanism

  • Typical dose: 50 mg once daily, may be increased to 100–200 mg daily based on blood pressure response and tolerance. Mechanism: Reduces heart rate, cardiac output, and myocardial oxygen demand; lowers blood pressure by reducing adrenergic activity through β‑1 receptor blockade. 


⚕️ Side Effects & Precautions

  • Common side effects: Dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headache, light‑headedness. Serious/Rare risks: Bradycardia, heart block, heart failure exacerbation, mood changes including depression or hallucinations, Raynaud’s phenomenon, bronchospasm (especially in lung disease), hypoglycemia in diabetics, altered lipid profiles. Contraindications: Uncontrolled heart failure, bradycardia, heart block (≥2nd degree), cardiogenic shock, severe peripheral arterial disease, severe asthma or COPD. Caution advised in: Diabetes, thyroid disorders, renal/liver impairment, hyperlipidemia, major surgery (requires tapering), abrupt withdrawal can cause rebound angina or hypertension.
