Description

Uses & Benefits

 Primary Action

  • Atenolol is a cardio‑selective beta‑blocker that slows heart rate and reduces cardiac workload.

  • Chlorthalidone is a thiazide‑type diuretic that promotes salt and water elimination to lower blood volume and blood pressure

 Therapeutic Uses

  • Prescribed for hypertension (high blood pressure).

  • Helps reduce risk of cardiovascular complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease related to uncontrolled hypertension.

  • Also used to manage angina pectoris, edema, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and post-myocardial infarction care in some patients

Key Benefits

  • Dual‐action combination enhances efficacy: reduces heart load and reduces fluid volume more effectively than either component aloneOffers better blood pressure control and additional organ protection (heart, brain, kidneys) by addressing both rate and fluid retention

 Side Effects

Common (Generally Mild)

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, headache

  • Cold extremities (hands/feet), slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

  • Nausea, diarrhea, sometimes constipation

  • Increased urination due to diuretic effect

Less Common / Serious

  • Electrolyte imbalance (e.g. low potassium) – muscle cramps, weakness

  • Hypotension (excessively low blood pressure)

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itchy eyes), interstitial nephritis, jaundice

  • Worsening of kidney or liver function in susceptible individuals

  • Rare cases of thrombocytopenia or leukopenia (blood cell disorders) reported

Tips & Precautions

  • Do not stop abruptly—taper off under medical guidance to avoid rebound hypertension or arrhythmias

  • Take 4–5 hours before bedtime, especially to manage nocturnal urination risk due to chlorthalidone

  • Avoid apple or orange juice within 3–5 hours before/after ingestion, as they may interfere with medication effectiveness Limit alcohol—can exacerbate dizziness and hypotension

  • Monitor lab values and vitals:

    • Kidney & liver function

    • Serum electrolytes, especially potassium

    • Blood pressure and heart rate

    • Blood glucose levels if diabetic

 Contraindications

  • Severe bradycardia, 2nd/3rd-degree AV block, cardiogenic shock

  • Severe asthma/COPD, lupus, severe renal or hepatic impairment

  • Sulfa drug allergy (chlorthalidone is a sulfonamide)
