What It Is

Cefiget Syrup contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, effective against a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria 


Primary Uses & Benefits

Cefiget treats bacterial (not viral) infections, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, throat infections

  • Ear infections (otitis media)

  • Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis

  • Skin and soft tissue infections, and gonorrhea (uncomplicated)

 Side Effects (Common & Rare)

Common / Mild (usually self-limiting)

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, flatulence

  • Headache, dizziness, mild skin rash or itching

  • Oral thrush or vaginal discharge due to fungal overgrowth

Less Common / Serious

  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face/lips/tongue, hives, or anaphylaxis—especially in those allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins 

  • Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis → may cause bloody or severe diarrhea

  • Rare cases of hemolytic anemia, liver function changes, elevated amylase, or encephalopathy reported

  • Dark, tarry stools, blood in stool or urine, unexplained bleeding/bruising → possible hematological or hepatic concerns

  • Seizures, especially in patients with kidney impairment or very high doses 


& Dosage

  • Children ≥6 months to 12 years (≤45 kg): 8 mg/kg/day, typically once or twice daily orally

  • Older children & adults: usually switch to tablet form; syrup may be used in adolescents if preferred

  • Administer with or without food, though taking with food may reduce stomach upsetComplete the full prescribed course (typically 7–14 days) even if symptoms improve early to prevent bacterial resistance
