Description

KLARICID DS Granules is an antibiotic suspension containing clarithromycin. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics. It’s formulated as granules to be reconstituted into a syrup or suspension, suitable for oral use—often prescribed to children or patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

Manufacturer

  • Brand: Abbott Laboratories (Pakistan) Limited.

  • Pack size typically 60 ml granules suspension after reconstitution.

Uses / Indications

KLARICID DS Granules is used for treating a variety of bacterial infections. Some common indications are:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g. pharyngitis, tonsillitis)

  • Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g. bronchitis, pneumonia)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g. cellulitis)

  • Ear infections (acute otitis media)

  • Sometimes in combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori infections (stomach ulcers) when required.

Benefits

  • Offers a broad spectrum of activity against many bacteria.

  • Good tissue penetration and efficacy in treating both respiratory and skin infections.

  • A suspensible form (granules → syrup) makes it easier for children or those who cannot swallow pills.

  • “DS” means “double strength,” so typically more potent per dose, which may reduce dosage frequency.

Dosage & How to Use

  • Reconstitute the granules to make a suspension as per instructions on label or as directed by a physician.

  • Administer orally; can be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, taking with food or milk may help.

  • Typical duration depends on type and severity of infection. Usual course: 7–14 days or as prescribed.

Side Effects & Precautions

Like all medications, KLARICID DS may cause side effects. Some are common and mild; others are rare but serious. Usage should be under medical supervision.

Common side effects:

  • Diarrhoea & stomach discomfort / indigestion

  • Headache, loss of appetite

  • Liver dysfunction (elevated liver enzymes) in rare cases.

  • QT prolongation (heart rhythm issues) especially in vulnerable patients.

  • Drug interactions: Clarithromycin interacts with many medications (e.g. certain statins, anticoagulants, etc.) so inform healthcare provider of all current medications.

  • Not to be used if allergic to clarithromycin or other macrolides.

  • Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease.
