• Active Ingredient: Nitrofurantoin 100 mg — an antibiotic of the nitrofuran class, commonly used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) 

✅ Indications & Dosage

• Primary Use: Acute and recurrent UTIs caused by susceptible bacteria like E. coli and Staph aureus 

• Typical Treatment Regimen:

  • Adults: 100 mg twice daily for 5–7 days 

  • Prophylaxis: 50–100 mg once daily at bedtime if recurrent How to Take: With food or milk to enhance absorption and minimize stomach upset — swallow whole; do not crush or chew 

⚠️ Contraindications & Precautions

• Kidney Impairment: Avoid if creatinine clearance < 30–60 mL/min due to accumulation and reduced urinary levels 

• Pregnancy: Contraindicated at term (after 38 weeks) due to hemolytic anemia risk in newborns; G6PD-deficient infants under 1 month should avoid it Other Major Cautions:

  • Avoid in those with liver disease or pulmonary issues; regular monitoring recommended 

  • G6PD deficiency, porphyria, or previous nitrofurantoin-induced liver/lung reactions are red flags
