SEROQUEL 100 mg Tab – Antipsychotic Treatment for Mood Disorders

Seroquel (Quetiapine 100 mg) is an atypical antipsychotic approved for treating schizophrenia, bipolar mania, bipolar depression, and prevention of recurrence in bipolar spectrum disorders. It is taken orally and available in immediate-release film-coated tablets engraved with “SEROQUEL 100.”

📈 Mechanism of Action

Seroquel works via antagonism of dopamine (D₂) and serotonin (5‑HT₂A) receptors, and it exerts antihistamine effects at low doses, contributing to sedation. Its metabolite, norquetiapine, exhibits unique antidepressant activity. 


⚠️ Safety, Side Effects & Precautions

Very Common (≥ 1 in 10 users):

  • Sedation, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, weight gain, orthostatic hypotension. 

Common (1–10%):

  • Constipation, elevated appetite, elevated lipids or liver enzymes, blurred vision, tachycardia, peripheral edema, unusual dreams, irritability, changes in thyroid hormone or blood counts, increased prolactin.

  • QT prolongation, sudden cardiac death, pancreatitis, tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, severe allergic reactions, dyskinesia, myocarditis, agranulocytosis. 

Withdrawal symptoms:

  • Abrupt discontinuation may cause insomnia, nausea, headache, dizziness, irritability—gradual tapering over at least 1–2 weeks is recommended. 

Important warnings:

  • Avoid use in elderly patients with dementia due to significantly increased mortality risk.

  • Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular, metabolic (e.g., diabetes, dyslipidemia), liver, or seizure disorders.

  • Do not use in individuals under 18 years old. 


📌 Dosage & Administration (Adults)

  • Schizophrenia: Initial titration from 50 mg to 300 mg over 4 days, then maintenance between 150–750 mg/day in divided doses. 

  • Bipolar Mania/Depression: Gradual increase from 100 mg toward effective doses, typically up to 800 mg/day depending on severity. 

  • Administration tips: Swallow tablets whole, with or without food. Avoid grapefruit juice. Do not crush or chew. Monitor seniors and those with liver impairment carefully.
